To generate text with GPT-4, you need to subscribe to ChatGPT+, the premium version of ChatGPT.
Premium Access steps
Connection and redirection
Create your OpenAI account, or log in if you already have one.
Once connected, the button on the GPT-4 announcement page will take you directly to ChatGPT.
If you’re already a ChatGPT+ user, that’s all there is to it. If not, you’ll need to consider an upgrade.
Upgrade
Clicking on the “Upgrade to Plus” button in the left-hand menu will bring up a pop-up window extolling the virtues of the upgrade.
Payment
You will then be directed to a standard payment page. The cost is $20 per month.
Immediate Access
Once payment has been made, access to the new model via ChatGPT is instantaneous.
Using GPT-4
When you start a new chat, a drop-down list lets you choose between older models and GPT-4. However, please note that GPT-4 is not as fast as other models.
Tokens: Understanding Cost and Quantity
GPT-4 usage is measured in tokens. Each token can correspond to a single character or an entire word. To give an idea of costs :
- 8K context: Entry at $0.03 / 1K tokens and exit at $0.06 / 1K tokens.
- 32K context: Entry at $0.06 / 1K tokens and exit at $0.12 / 1K tokens.
If you generate an item of 5K tokens, it will cost you, for example, $0.30 for input and $0.30 for output, i.e. a total of $0.60 using the 8K context rate.
For better visualization, a token can represent a preposition such as “de” or a letter such as “a”. So 1K tokens could correspond roughly to a short paragraph or several sentences, although this depends on the complexity and length of the generated text.
Free access to GPT-4: Is it possible?
At present, it is not possible to access GPT-4 on OpenAI with the free version of ChatGPT.
